Istria, Dalmatia and the islands — stone houses, sea-view apartments and villas with pools, booked by enquiry. No problem.
Croatia’s coast runs from the Venetian towns of Istria down through Dalmatia to Dubrovnik, with more than a thousand islands in between. Most of the best places to stay are private apartments, stone houses and villas rather than hotels — often family-run, and often booked by word of mouth.
Nemaproblem.com lists the ones we would stay in ourselves, with real addresses, honest walking distances to the beach and prices in euro per night and per week. Send an enquiry with your dates and you get a personal answer, usually within a few hours. No booking fee and no payment taken online.
Croatia is long and narrow, and the coast changes character every hundred kilometres. These are the areas we know best — pick one, or ask us to compare two.

June and September are the sweet spot: the sea is warm, the ferries run and the coast is quieter than in July and August. May is good for walking and sightseeing, while October suits cities and wine country.
For Istria, the islands and the Makarska hinterland, yes — a car makes the trip. In Split, Rovinj and Dubrovnik old towns you can manage without one, but parking is limited, so choose a stay with a space.
Most Croatian beaches are pebble or rock, which is why the water is so clear. Sandy options include Lopar on Rab, Baska on Krk and the shallows near Nin. Water shoes are worth packing.
Jadrolinija and Krilo run the main routes. Foot passengers can usually turn up, but cars need booking in July and August. Split is the main hub for Hvar, Brac and Korcula.
Less than Italy or Greece in high season, more than Albania. A good apartment for four starts around €120 a night on the coast; inland Istria is cheaper.
